Background:
Regulations require Districts participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to ensure sufficient funds are provided to the nonprofit school food service account for meals served to students not eligible for free or reduced-price meals. One way to meet this requirement is through prices charged for paid meals. The purpose of this requirement, Paid Lunch Equity (PLE), is to increase paid meal prices to be more equal with funds brought in from free and reduced-price meal reimbursements. |

Summary:
In order to comply with the PLE requirement for the NSLP, the District needs to increase the paid lunch price from $3.15 to $3.25 for the 2023-24 school year. By remaining on NSLP, it is expected that paid lunch prices will increase each year. While the price charged for a paid breakfast is not tied to the PLE requirement, we reviewed this price and determined it is reasonable to increase paid breakfast price from $1.25 to $1.50. We will be entering the final year of a 5-year contract with Organic Life for the 2023-24 school year. This will require us to conduct a new procurement for a food service management contract for the 2024-25 school year. This process will begin in August and will include discussions around the structure of the procurement and whether we choose to remove the high schools from the NSLP. |
