Background:
Spanish Language Arts is a requirement for Transitional Bilingual Education programs. One programming model for Spanish Language Arts is FLES (foreign language elementary schools). Johnson and Pleasant Hill are providing all students in 1st through 3rd grade the opportunity to learn Spanish and enrich their skills through FLES. The program began in the 2021-2022 school year and expanded by one grade level every year. For the 2024-25 school year, Spanish Language Arts/FLES will be offered in grades 1 through 4 at Johnson and Pleasant Hill schools. The Multilingual Department collaboratively developed curriculum content for 4th and 5th grade FLES and revised the curriculum for grades 1-3 to align to ISBE’s Spanish Language Arts Standards.
