Background:
Regulations require Districts participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to ensure sufficient funds are provided to the nonprofit school food service account for meals served to students not eligible for free or reduced price meals. One way to meet this requirement is through prices charged for paid meals. The purpose of this requirement, Paid Lunch Equity (PLE), is to increase paid meal prices to be more equal with funds brought in from free and reduced-price meal reimbursements.

Summary:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued waivers for School Year 2021-22 allowing Districts to operate the NSLP Seamless Summer Option (SSO), which provides meals at no cost to all students. Since our district will be operating under Seamless Summer Option (SSO) for 2021-22 school year, we do not need to follow PLE requirements for 2021-22 school year; however, Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has suggested to maintain PLE and publish pricing for the community to know where prices would stand if SSO was not available. In order to comply with the PLE requirement for the NSLP, the District needs to increase the paid lunch price from $3.05 to $3.15 for the 2021-22 school year.
