|
Background
|
The District evaluated an area for a potential hazard using the Illinois Department of Transportation’s guidelines. A hazard is declared to exist in any single situation in which the sum of points equals or exceeds 12. The area studied was walking along Ferry Rd. from Torch Parkway to River Rd. for Bower Elementary School students. This evaluation totaled 11.5 points. The Board of Education can award a maximum of two points to any hazard evaluation if extenuating circumstances exist. Even though there is a sidewalk along Ferry Rd., it is very close to the road, which is a busy thoroughfare for travelers. Also, there is ongoing construction of additional townhomes in this area, and students may need to walk along construction fences. Therefore, we are asking the Board of Education to award the one-half (.5) additional point needed to declare walking along Ferry Rd. a temporary hazard. Temporary hazards are for a one-year period, and must be resubmitted annually.
