Subject: Approval of Organic Life, LLC Food Service Management Contract Renewal
Vision 2026:
Operational Excellence Strategies 2
Maintain strong fiscal health of the organization.
Policy:
Background Organic Life, LLC is under contract with the district for management of K-8 food services under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The District will be completing the third year of a five-year contract renewal option. The Board of Education approved a non-NSLP contract for the two high schools in June 2019 for a 3-year period, ending on June 30, 2022. However, during the pandemic, through waivers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the high schools have been operating under the NSLP for the past two school years. Since we are under NSLP for K-8, we are allowed to add or remove schools from the program.

Organic Life K-12 Attachment to Board Report FY23.pdf
Summary: Given the current climate, we discussed with Organic Life the option of adding both high schools to our current K-8 NSLP contract. Both parties have agreed, and established that the meal rates will be the same for all schools K-12.

As part of the renewal process, the Board of Education can annually approve the contract up to the full five-year length of the contract. According to the Illinois State Board of Education and our original contract, the negotiated price increase must not exceed the most recent year’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), which has been set at 7.0% for December 2021. Organic Life has proposed an increase of 7.0%.

In addition, due to the State-mandated minimum wage increase effective January 1, 2022, and January 1, 2023, the Illinois State Board of Education Nutrition Department allows an additional fixed-wage fee to be paid by the District. The Minimum Wage Increase Calculation Worksheet estimates a total additional fixed wage fee of $52,508.40 for FY 2023.
