Background
|
Organic Life, LLC is under contract with the district for management of K-12 food services under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The District will be completing the fourth year of a five-year contract renewal option, and this renewal expires on June 30, 2023. The Board approved the established meal rates for this renewal in July 2022. Due to rising food costs and other current market conditions, the Board subsequently approved an emergency contract amendment in January 2023, which adjusted the contracted meal rates to reflect current market pricing. This meal rate increase was offset by a temporary increase in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reimbursement rate, so there was no financial impact.

As part of the renewal process, the Board of Education can annually approve the contract renewal up to the full five-year length of the contract.
According to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), we are allowed by the USDA to negotiate rates for the 2023-2024 school year and approve based on mutual agreement. Organic Life has proposed meal rates that align with our budget and are consistent with other districts who are also in the final year of contracts. This contract renewal has been discussed and clarified with ISBE.
